Why You Should Wait for Paint: Start With the Hard-to-Find Pieces First

When decorating a room, it’s natural to reach for a paint swatch first. Color feels fun, immediate, and inspiring—not to mention the convenience of painting a new home before you move in, while rooms are empty. But starting with paint can

actually make design harder. I learned this the hard way, many years ago! The secret? Begin with the pieces that are difficult to change -- or that have the fewest options for color -- and let paint follow.
Begin with what's rare and fixed
Certain elements of your room, such as a rug you own or sofa you're planning to buy, will have a clearly definited color palette. Unless you plan to change them immediately after newly painting your room, they need to anchor your direction for wall color. Paint can be infinitely customized and mixed to suite. Not the case with your heirloom rug! Think of the elements that might be fixed:
Rugs: Choose the rug first, and your paint and textiles can complement it.
Furniture: Bold upholstery and designer fabric treatments are special. Let them lead your design story.
Custom Artwork: Beloved artwork is a critical element to the way your room feels. Don't let the wall color compete.
Fixtures & Hardware: Lighting, cabinetry, and built-ins usually come in fixed finishes. Work your color around these tones, ather than against them.
Layer with solid textiles and accessories
Now think through the addition of tonal drapery, pillows, throws. Ceramics, books, and colored glass are contributors, as well. These flexible layers help reinforce your palette without locking you into something permanent.
Save Paint for Last
After everything is selected, sample several colors you like by ordering removable swatches (we love those from Sherwin Williams). Look at your selections in the room, at different times of day. You can customize and shift intensity until you're sold. Now you have a room that feels cohesive, curated, and intentional.
The Bottom Line
Paint is infinite. So design smart! Start with what’s rare and fixed, and let paint be your finish. Follow this order, and you’ll create a space that’s visually stunning and stress-free for you.
